Approach and activities proposed
The lesson’s goal is to demonstrate the value of an antique book and an actual one and the importance of writing along the societies. Students will be initiated to simple techniques opened to everyone. In the first part of the lesson, the artist will present tools and materials needed to do illumination and calligraphy (art of handwriting) : pen (ink writing), pen older, ink, papers, parchment, brushes, reed pens, pigments, egg medium, gold leaf or shell, inkpots, books, chopper, scraper, burnish stone, etc. Specialized books about those elements will be available for the participants. The artist will present history, writing techniques, ancient book making and the scriptorium (room reserved for writing in a monastery). Different writing texts (French, Old French, Latin and Greak), make-up technics, interpretation and some links with comic strips will also be explained. The artist insist particularly on the importance of the knowledge of writing communication for this art expression. Finally, different materials (wood, paper, cards, cartoon, book, ink, pigments, etc) will be available for the students to help them create an illumination or a calligraphy exercice. Each student will be guided during this exercice and will keep his work (artistic production).
